Paperbackpages. Describes the Life of a poor farmer Hori and his struggle to keep alive in the milieu of British Raj. Like the military asides of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, you are left wondering why the heck is all this in the book. The boy is happy and chirpy and walking between the big limbs of his father, between the long strides. My favourite Indian writer till iin has been RK Narayan. It premchans a novel of contrast. A story of lessons, of connections, of society, struggles, faith, cheating, theft, of every problem, of every positivity that existed in society then, exists in society now!
Jhunia, the daughter of Bhola, was a widow and eloped with Gobar after she got pregnant by him. She begins craving for it. It depicts how, the peasant India dies day-by-day under the munehi of debt which compounds exponentially within years, while those in the higher class are busy with their own little schemes. Each character is introduced, and developed beautifully.
To pay off the debt Hori works beyond his capacity and eventually dies in the end. A must read, albeit in Hindi to get the real feel of the dust, grime, stink and the pitiable condition of the Indian village.
